Silymarin, extracted from milk thistle, is a compound composed of three flavonoids (flavolignans): silychristin, silydianin, and silybin (the most active). This powerful milk thistle extract has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat jaundice. The purifying properties of silymarin are well documented in the literature, although its mechanisms of action are not yet fully understood.

Silymarin is in fact commonly used to promote liver and detoxification functions of the body . Its activity protects hepatocytes from damage caused by radiation and iron overload, making it more difficult to absorb toxins, then promoting their elimination and promoting the regeneration of liver tissue by acting as a stimulant of protein synthesis in the damaged liver. Silymarin, like all flavonoids, has a powerful antioxidant action , thus protecting against oxidative stress but also acting on enzymatic systems associated with glutathione. Recent research is focusing on its effect on carbohydrate metabolism, particularly as an agent for counteracting insulin resistance.

The Silymarin contained in Sily PHYTO Phytosome® is presented in a "phytosomal" form, combining it with phospholipids with high affinity for certain natural substances, forming a particular lipid molecular complex: the "phytosome".

This complex is made up of approximately one-third of the plant extract characterising the active ingredient and the remaining portion of a phospholipid matrix, which increases the absorption, plasma concentration and the efficacy of the highly hydrophilic active ingredient in a significantly superior manner in terms of bioavailability compared to the same active ingredient in free form.
