Lactobacillus reuteri 30 tablets YAMAMOTO
One of the most extensively studied and highly effective Lactobacilli is Lactobacillus reuteri, which is commonly already present in the intestinal mucosa from the very first hours of a newborn’s life, as it forms part of the important immune support transmitted from mother to child, providing initial protection through its anti-inflammatory effects in the intestine. It is no coincidence that it is currently one of the safest and most widely used probiotic strains in pediatrics, where it is applied for the significant benefits it provides not only as a probiotic but also in cases of troublesome gas-related colic, which often affects newborns, especially those fed formula.
In adults, however, its concentration may decrease in situations of stress, a weakened immune system (where it exerts a beneficial "immunomodulatory" effect), inflammatory conditions, gastrointestinal infections, and prolonged use of antibiotics. It is particularly useful for this purpose in cases of diarrhea, gastroenteritis (offering protection against rotaviruses), and irritable bowel syndrome, helping to prevent the worsening of diarrhea and reducing the recovery time required. It works by producing "reuterin," a substance with antimicrobial activity, as well as lactic and acetic acids, which, by lowering the pH of the digestive tract, inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli.
NOT JUST THE GUT....
The subject of growing and ongoing research, an increasing number of studies confirm that a healthy gut microbiome is a major contributor to cardiovascular well-being.
One of the first factors to keep in mind if we want to maintain a healthy heart and good blood circulation is keeping blood cholesterol levels within the "safe" range, since high cholesterol is one of the main risks to our cardiovascular health.
Probiotic bacteria, among the many physiological processes in which they are involved and that influence our health, are emerging as one of the most cutting-edge alternatives for controlling blood cholesterol levels through specific mechanisms.
Lactobacilli, such as Lactobacillus reuteri, produce exopolysaccharides—fibers that can bind to cholesterol and prevent its absorption—and an enzyme complex called bile salt hydrolase (BSH), which reduces the intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol, which is then excreted in the stool. In fact, for cholesterol to be absorbed—like all fats—it requires conjugated bile acids. Taking Lactobacillus reuteri therefore increases the excretion of cholesterol through feces by breaking the chemical bonds of conjugated bile acids. Further related mechanisms are the subject of ongoing research, but thanks to this additional effect on cardiovascular health, the intake of Lactobacillus reuteri is emerging as a significant complement to a balanced diet, physical exercise, and the use of specific nutraceutical supplements such as omega-3s, citrus bioflavonoids like those found in bergamot, phytosterols, and vitamin K2.
