β-Alanine is a non-protein amino acid precursor to carnosine, a dipeptide synthesized from β-alanine and L-histidine, which has been shown to buffer skeletal muscle pH, helping to delay the onset of lactic acid-induced muscle acidosis.
Several studies suggest that continued β-alanine supplementation increases carnosine concentrations in skeletal muscle. Furthermore, a positive correlation appears to be proven between muscle carnosine and some parameters used to measure high-intensity exercise performance.
