The red-black belt (1st kup ) is the intermediate level between the red belt and the black belt. While the white belt (10th kup) is the starting level for all Taekwondo practitioners, and the progression to the subsequent colored belts (in order: half-yellow, yellow, yellow-green, green, green-blue, blue, blue-red, red) can be relatively quick, the time a student spends at the red-black belt can be longer. During this period, in fact, they must develop the technical and mental skills necessary to pass the exam to become a black belt.
Taekwondo Belt Grades
There are two types: Kup grades and Dan grades. Kup grades range from 10th to 1st, from yellow to red belt, and indicate the practitioner's experience levels. Dan grades are the experience levels of the black belt, the highest belt attainable, and range from 1st to 9th.
Kup and Dan are obtained through different exams: the former, through exams held in the students' gym; the Dan in the Federation, judged by three masters with a rank up to 6th Dan.
The 7th Dan is awarded by the World Federation.
